A sticker on a laptop lid lives a very different life from a label on a jar of jam. One gets scratched, rubbed and carried through the rain. The other sits on a shelf, gets handled by clean hands and might spend time in a fridge. Picking the right material at the start avoids labels that peel, smear or fade.
The short version
Vinyl is a flexible, plastic-based film. It handles moisture, sun and wear. Paper is a printed paper surface with an adhesive back. It looks natural and writes well, but it does not like water, oil or rough handling.
Comparison
| Feature | Vinyl | Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | High, resists scratches and tears | Moderate, can scuff and tear |
| Moisture | Water-resistant | Absorbs water and can curl or smudge |
| Sun and outdoor use | Suited to outdoor use | Fades and weakens outdoors |
| Feel | Smooth, slightly plastic | Natural, uncoated or coated paper |
| Writing on it | Needs a permanent marker | Takes ordinary pens easily |
| Typical look | Glossy or matte | Matte, smooth or textured |
| Typical use | Laptops, bottles, vehicles, outdoor gear | Gift tags, retail labels, indoor packaging |
Durability and moisture
If a sticker will be washed, rained on, left in a car, or rubbed against other items, choose vinyl. It keeps its edges and its colour under conditions that ruin paper. Paper is perfectly fine for dry, indoor, short-life uses: a thank-you sticker on a box, a label on a gift bag or a seal on an envelope.
Water bottles and coffee tumblers are a good example. A vinyl sticker will usually survive a rinse, while a paper one will often lift and shred. If a product goes in the fridge or freezer, mention it so we can advise on suitable materials and adhesives.
Adhesives
The glue matters as much as the face material. A permanent adhesive grabs hard and is difficult to remove, which suits packaging and outdoor use. A removable adhesive peels away without damage, which suits temporary promotions and surfaces you want to keep clean. Textured or curved surfaces need a stronger tack than smooth glass or plastic. Tell us what the sticker will be applied to and for how long, and we will recommend an adhesive. Do not guess, because a label that falls off or one that damages a surface is a frustrating result.
Finishes
Finish changes the look and the protection.
- Gloss deepens colour and gives a bright, shiny look. Good for bold logos and photos.
- Matte reduces glare and gives a calm, premium feel. Good for minimalist designs and text-heavy labels.
- Clear-film options let the surface show through, though white or light colours need care.

Common uses
- Product packaging: jars, bottles, boxes and bags. Think about moisture, oil, refrigeration and handling when you choose.
- Laptops and personal items: vinyl is the sensible choice, because scratches and sun come with the territory.
- Jars and candles: paper looks handcrafted, but oils and heat may stain it. Vinyl keeps a cleaner look for items that sweat or sit near warmth.
- Events and giveaways: either material works. Vinyl lasts longer, which helps if people will stick them on gear.
- Shipping and address labels: paper is common, but a durable label helps parcels that travel in poor weather.
Cut shapes
Stickers do not have to be squares. Cut-to-shape vinyl stickers follow the outline of your logo or illustration, so there is no background box. Circles, ovals, rounded rectangles and custom contours are all possible. Intricate shapes with tiny spikes or thin connecting bridges can tear and lift at the edge, so a simpler outline usually holds up better. Send your artwork and we will tell you how the cut will look. Getting the artwork right
- Use a vector logo or a high-resolution image.
- Keep text away from the cut line.
- Add a little extra colour beyond the cut, called bleed, so no white edge shows.
- Check legibility at the actual size.
